CAF debunks claims Ghana has been stripped of hosting rights for 2018 AWCON

                                                      

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has insisted it has not yet made a decision on the host country for the 2018 African Women’s Championship initially scheduled to be hosted by Ghana.

Initial reports suggested Ghana would be stripped of the rights to host the tournament scheduled for November, despite several renovation works continuing at different sports facilities as part of the preparations for the event.

CAF President Ahmad Ahmad had made commented earlier that indicated that Ghana had lost the rights to host the tournament, saying to KweseESPN, “We[CAF] are engaging several countries and should be able to announce a host during the CAF Extraordinary General Assembly in Egypt next month,”

However CAF on Monday released a statement to refute those claims reveal the report of the last inspection conducted in Ghana will be among several topics to be discussed at the next Organizing Committee for Women’s football to be held in Cairo.

The full statement from CAF reads:

  Following recent media reports, the Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF) authoritatively confirms that there has been no decision regarding the hosting rights of the Total Women’s Africa Cup of Nations Ghana 2018 scheduled for 17 November to 1 December.

The subject will be discussed at the next meeting of the Organising Committee for Women’s Football to be held in Cairo, Egypt, on Wednesday, 12 September 2018. The report of the last inspection visit is among items on the agenda.

The final decision will be taken by the CAF Executive Committee at its meeting on 27-28 September 2018 in Egypt.

Already qualified for the tournament are Nigeria, South Africa, Mali, Zambia, Algeria, Equatorial Guinea and Cameroon. Ghana would join the seven teams as the host nation.
